Morning in the Country

There is a fine mist that settles over the land around us some mornings. It washes the vista with a golden glow that foretells a beautiful day. As I sit here and read about the early life and ambitions of George Agnew Reid, I am encouraged. He carved a momentous art career out of a Canada young and labour-focused. It was more important in his time to cut down trees and clear land for crops and settlement than to create art. I sit here in 2011, only 140 years later, on a farm where the land is cleared and my computer is the gateway to creativity and knowledge. And the vistas that flowed from George Agnew Reid’s paintbrush onto canvas can still be found in a calm morning. His scenes transport me back to his time and I see the people of whom I write. It’s an inspiring way to begin a day.
